Humala, Garcia send well-wishes to Chavez

Peruvian President-elect Ollanta Humala sent a message to Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez Friday after it was revealed the latter has undergone cancer treatment in Cuba for a tumor.

“My best wishes and solidarity for President Hugo Chavez, his family, and I will pray for his recovery and quick return to his homeland,” Humala said by Twitter.

Chavez said in a television address on Thursday that he had been in a Cuban hospital for almost a month for treatment, international media reported.

Humala was a close ally of Chavez in the former’s 2006 presidential campaign. In this year’s campaign, Humala distanced himself from the leftist president in order to present a more moderate image to the Peruvian electorate.

Also on Friday, President Alan Garcia sent his well-wishes to Chavez.

“We wish fervently that he can overcome this illness. We will pray that it happens,” Garcia said.

He added: “We have had different positions, but as a human we value his efforts for Latin American integration. We are in agreement with that and we accompany him in these moments of uncertainty.”
