IADB Approves $25 Million Loan for Peru Education

The Inter-American Development Bank, IADB, has approved a $25 million loan to Peru to improve education for children in three departments.

The funds will be aimed at improving education for children between the ages of three and five in the departments of Ayacucho, Huancavelica and Huanuco, the IADB said in a release. The three departments were chosen because of their high levels of poverty and the high rate of repetition of grades by students, the bank said.

The project involves improving teaching practices and the participation of parents in the school system. It also involves renovating 190 schools.

“This initiative could become a national strategy,” the IADB said, adding that it is a “first step” to implement a comprehensive model.

“Investing in initial education is vital because of its positive influence on a student’s performance and in the achievements children can reach during their lives.”
