Construction of wind power farms slated for 2011

Construction of two wind power farms are slated to begin in 2011, the general manager of Spanish-Peruvian Iberoperuana Inversiones, Juan Coronado, said.

Corondado said the construction would require an investment of $370 million, state news agency Andina reported. Coronado said last February the total investment for the two projects would total $280 million.

Both wind farms are located in Peru’s northern coastal region. The first is in Cupisnique, located about 55 miles north of Trujillo in the La Libertad department, which will produce 80 megawatts of energy.

The second wind farm will be built in Talara, located on the coast in the Piura department. It is to produce 30Mw.

“In general the entire northern coast has potential to develop these types of projects and also the Marcona and Paracas zone (located in the southern Ica department) because they have winds that would make a wind project profitable.”

Meanwhile, Energy and Mines Minister Pedro Sánchez said operations for 26 renewable energy projects are scheduled for 2012. The projects include the three wind farms capable of producing 142Mw, four solar plants capable of 80Mw, two biomass plants that can produce 27.4Mw and 17 small hydroelectric plants with 162.3Mw.

“With this process we are trying to diversify the energy matrix with renewable energies,” said Sánchez. “This is going to allow (the National Electric Power Grid) to incorporate 411 Mw of new energy that will enter into service in 2012.”
