Finland’s “Northern Stars” exhibit to shine in Peru’s capital

“Northern Stars,” an outstanding exhibition of Finnish modern design will open in Lima’s Germán Krüger Espantoso Gallery on Sept. 15, 2009, before setting off on a tour of Latin America and Europe’s most fashionable and dynamic capitals.

The exhibition, which is sponsored by the Finnish Embassy in collaboration with Helsinki’s Museum of Design and the Peruvian-North American Cultural Institute, or ICPNA, will showcase a comprehensive 100-year panorama of Finland’s most innovative, creative and surprising examples of modern design.

On display will be approximately 200 pieces – including furniture, metal and glass works, textiles and ceramics – crafted by some of the hottest names in Finnish design and some of the industry’s best-known design houses, including as Arabia/Iitala, Fiskars, Marimekko, Nokia, and Metso.

“Northern Stars” will also feature world-renown designer Eero Aarnio’s “the tree” space divider. Part of the profit generated by the sale of this original space divider, designed for the Martela Oyj collection, is donated to a World Vision Finland regional development project in the Peruvian Andes. For every “tree” space divider sold, four fruit trees, which also become an additional source of food, are be planted to prevent erosion.

Design in an intrinsic part of Finnish identity and dates back to the turn of the 19th century, when artists and architects – such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Eliel Saarinen – grew fascinated by creating practical, bold and modern objects deeply influenced by the Art Nouveau style. After the Second World War, the industry’s demand and consumers’ need for such objects let design houses to hire a new generation of young and dynamic designers to produce such objects for mass consumption, as well as works of art for exhibits and design shows.
