Peruvian President-elect Ollanta Humala will begin a tour throughout South America this week starting with a stop in Brazil, daily El Comercio reported.
Humala said in an interview with CNN that he will also visit Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela. He is also planning a visit to the United States, the report said.
“We want to go to the countries in Mercosur [which includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay] and I also have a pending trip to the United States,” Humala said. “I hope I can do that trip soon. I would like to meet with the American administration.”
Humala defeated opponent Keiko Fujimori, a 36-year-old right wing congresswoman and daughter of jailed ex-President Alberto Fujimori, in a June 5 run-off vote.
With 98.16 percent of the ballots counted, Humala has 51.47 percent support compared to 48.54 percent for Fujimori.
Since Fujimori conceded to Humala on Monday, the latter has been receiving congratulations from regional leaders.
Bolivian President Evo Morales said Humala’s victory demonstrated “the end of time for the oligarchs, hierarchies and monarchies… even though some sectors and countries could be upset.”
Conservative Chilean President Sebastian Piñera said he hopes his country and Peru can maintain good relations. Peru and Chile have a history of strained relations going back to at least the 1879-1883 War of the Pacific.
“I talked with President-elect Ollanta Humala and we hope to have the best relations between two neighboring and brotherly countries, like Peru and Chile,” he said.
Humala will replace outgoing President Alan Garcia on July 28.
