Peru signs $90 million agreement for water, sanitation project

Peru signed a $90 million agreement on Thursday with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Spain’s International Cooperation and Development Agency (AECID) to finance water and sanitation works in five regions in Peru’s south-central Andean highlands.

The Spanish Fund for Cooperation on Water and Sanitation in Latin America will provide $72 million, while Peru has agreed to contribute $18 million, state news agency Andina reported.

The IDB will provide the technical assistance to implement the project, which is intended to improve water and sanitation efficiency and sustainability.

The project will be implemented in 345 municipalities in Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica and Puno regions. It is expected to benefit approximately 220,000 people.

“This initiative will mark the difference in terms of well-being, reduction of poverty, improving health and nutrition,” IDB representative Fidel Jaramillo said.
