Famed Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo greeted by Peru’s García at Government Palace before concert

Plácido Domingo, one of the most praised, versatile and talented operatic tenors, met with Peru President Alan García at the Government Palace in Lima on Tuesday, a day before his scheduled performance with Peru’s National Symphonic Orchestra.

“We truly appreciate your visit to Lima,” said García, who showed Plácido Domingo plans for the construction of Lima’s Grand Theater. “It is an act of spiritual elevation for you to be with us.”

Born in Madrid to parents who were Zarzuela performers, Plácido Domingo moved to Mexico at the age of eight. He attended Mexico City’s Music Conservatory to study piano and conducting, but was sidetracked into vocal training shortly after his versatile voice was discovered. He made his operatic debut at Monterrey as Alfredo in “La Traviata” and then spent more than two years with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv.

Since his debut performance, Plácido Domingo has regularly appeared at Milan’s La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, London’s Covent Garden, Paris’ Bastille Opera, the San Francisco Opera, Chicago’s Lyric Opera, the Washington National Opera, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.
