Peruvian judge arrested for allegedly soliciting sexual favors from murder defendant’s sister

Peruvian police arrested a criminal court judge late Wednesday night in Arequipa on charges he tried to coerce sexual favors from the sister of a man facing murder charges in exchange for a favorable ruling in his case.

Judge Francisco León Guerrero was suspended pending criminal proceedings,” daily El Comercio reported.

Mercedes Villarán de la Torre filed a complaint approximately six months ago after Guerrero contacted her repeatedly to press his indecent proposal. The judge was arrested in his apartment after anti-corruption police and Villarán set up a sting operation that reportedly caught him caught him red-handed.

“Right now the judge is under arrest for a flagrant crime,” Superior Court Prosecutor Uriel Terán told Enlace Nacional TV.

He faces sexual assault and corruption charges.

Dr. Hugo Salas, head of the Arequipa Bar Association, said his organization planned to push for a “speedy and severe” handling of the charges against Guerrero, “and that this type of judge be drastically sanctioned.”

Villarán’s brother, Juan José Villarán de la Torre, 23, is accused of killing Alberto Madueño Cuadros last year.
