At Least 15 People Die After Bus Goes Off Cliff in Southern Peru

At least 15 people died when the bus they were traveling in lost control and went over a cliff in southern Peru, plunging some 150 meters.

Newspaper El Comercio reported that 37 people were injured in the accident, which occurred late Saturday in the Arequipa region. The incident occurred at Km 762 of the South Panamerican highway.

According to survivors, the driver of the bus was driving recklessly before the accident occurred. Passengers said the driver was speeding and crossing over into oncoming traffic. The bus driver died in the accident, according to the report.

Similar accidents occur regularly in Peru, particularly among the smaller bus companies. In October, 22 people died when a bus plunged off a cliff in northern Peru’s Piura region.

The accidents most frequently occur at night, more often than not the result of reckless driving on mountain roads.
