Peru’s presidential election could come down to a photo finish.
A survey by pollster Datum released Thursday shows a tie between candidates Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Both have 42.3 percent support, according to the poll published by daily Peru.21, with the remaining 15 percent opting to spoil their ballots.
In Lima, where about a third of Peru’s population lives, Kuczynski has 44.1 percent, compared to 40.5 percent for Fujimori. In southern Peru, Kuczynski’s lead widens to 55.3 percent versus 29.1 percent for Fujimori.
But in the north, Fujimori has a strong advantage, holding a lead with 53.9 percent support versus 28.8 percent for her opponent.
The poll has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
Fujimori won the first round of voting in April, but didn’t secure enough to avoid a second round runoff against Kuczynski, known as PPK, on June 5.
Both campaigns have had slip ups since the first vote.
Fujimori, the daughter of jailed ex-president Alberto Fujimori, had to publicly rebuke her younger brother and congressman after he said he would seek office in 2021 if she losses. She has also had to address comments from key allies that her father should be released from prison.
Kuczynski’s disappearance for over a week while he was visiting the United States raised eyebrows in Peru, where he is seen by many as being too close to the US. One analyst wrote a column with the title, originally in English, as “Waiting for PPK.”
Bickering within high-ranking party members also came to the surface, requiring the former finance minister to address it publicly.
