Peru and Colombia have signed a technical cooperation agreement for joint action in conservation of national parks and protected areas that the both share along Peru’s northeastern border.

The agreement has been signed during the first Latin American national parks meeting,  being held in Lima this week.  The Council of the Latin American technical cooperation network for national parks and wildlife, Redparques, is formed by Peru and 15 other countries — Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The Peru-Colombia binational agreement — signed by Pedro Gamboa of the national parks service, Sernanp, and Julia Miranda of Colombia’s National Natural Parks—  also aims to foster sustainable development in the indigenous communities within the protected areas.

The national parks meeting includes discussion on the Redparques proposal on climate change mitigation to the COP21 meeting in Paris later this year, as well as a review of projects underway on solutions to climate change in the Amazon.

Those attending the meeting will spend the final day visiting Lomas de Lachay, the unique mist-fed wildlife reserve in the desert north of Lima.
