At Least 14 Killed In Bus Accident On Peruvian Mountain Road

At least 14 people were killed Thursday when a bus went off a cliff on a mountain road in south-central Peru, state news agency Andina reported.

Another eight people were injured in the accident, which occurred in the district of Vilcabamba in the north Cusco region. The injured were transferred to a hospital in the closer town of Andahuaylas, in Apurimac region.

The bus belonged to the Niño Jesus de Turpo company, Andina said. The driver of the bus was a 23-year-old man who did not have a driving license, according to the report.

Accidents on Peru’s treacherous mountain highways are common. While the roads are often in bad state, the conditions are made worse by drivers who are reckless and vehicles that are old and poorly maintained.
