The defense attorney for jailed ex-President Alberto Fujimori, Cesar Nakasaki, may represent Joran van der Sloot, the 22-year-old Dutch citizen accused of killing a university student in his Lima hotel room on May 30, daily Peru.21 reported.
The possibility that Nakasaki may represent van der Sloot comes as the Dutch citizen’s recently appointed defense lawyer Máximo Altez decided to quite the case, citing personal threats against him.
“I have received threats, a lot of threatening emails,” Altez said. “I’m an older person; this isn’t for me.”
Van der Sloot is accused of killing Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old University of Lima business administration student after meeting her at a casino in Lima’s Miraflores district.
The Dutch citizen is being held at Lima’s maximum security Miguel Castro Castro prison. He is being held in a segregated block that includes Colombian hit man Alejandro Trujillo and the Luis Valdez, the former mayor of Pucallpa who has been accused of ordering the 2004 assassination of radio commentator Alberto Rivera.
Flores’ death came exactly five years after US teenager Natalie Holloway went missing in Aruba. Van der Sloot was considered the prime suspect in Holloway’s death. He was arrested twice but never convicted.
Flores is the daughter of businessman Ricardo Flores, a former presidential candidate and well-known Caminos del Inca rally driver. Stephany had ridden as co-pilot with her father two years ago in the grueling, cross-Andean rally.
This news story had me thinking about, exactly how does the Criminal Legal System of Peru work or operate? To that end earlier today I came across several portals in Peru that explained just that. Some of them wee in Spanish and put forth by the Peru Government, some were from NGOs such as the United Nation, the Organization of American States, Amnesty International and Wikepedia.
You may do your readers of English a service by doing a series of articles on the Judicial System of Peru and thereby explaining to your readers the process, please? I do not have the resources of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law or the College of Law at the University of Freiburg, in Freiburg, Germany available to me anymore for further research on this matter.

It seems to me from my readings so far, that Peru is making strides in the direction of accepting through treaties and conventions a modernization of its Legal Systems.
I believe that swift Peruvian justice should be granted for Ms. Flores.

why does this beast van der Sloot get decent food instead of the regular prison fare for all inmates? he deserves NO SPECIAL treatment or a private cell. The parents of Stephanie Flores should sue the American government and the FBI for $20 million dollars for being instrumental in causing the death of their daughter. Why? I read an article which stated that the FBI hatched an idiotic plan that would cost Stephanie her life. To get Joran van der Sloot to tell them where he had disposed of the body of Natalie Holloway, whom he murdered in 2005, they gave him $25,000 with the promise of $250,000 more when he had fulfilled his promise. Joran used that initial bribe money to flee to Peru, and when that money ran out, Stephanie’s life was forfeit.
First, I would like to extend my hearfelt condolences to the Flores family. Stephany was young and beautiful and deserved to live a long life. Urine (Joran) van der Sloot ended her life in a brutal, cowardly way. This man deserves to be in a Peruvian prison, without parole, for life. The world, and Americans in particular, have a renewed respect for Peru. Peruvian police don’t play. Anyone looking at the expressions on the two policemen, who brought va der Sloot back to Lima, Peru, can clearly see that, even with a language barrier! I would hate to cross either one of those men.
