American citizen to be extradited to Peru for killing wife and dumping body at sea

William Trickett Smith, a U.S. citizen suspected of killing and then dumping his Peruvian wife’s body in a suitcase, will be extradited to Peru to stand trial, daily El Comercio reported.

Pennsylvania Federal Court Judge J. Andrew Smyser ruled Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence to allow Smith’s extradition to Peru, where he is suspected of the murder of Jana Claudia Gómez Menéndez, 21.

Gómez’s body was stuffed in a suitcase and found in August 2007, after is washed ashore on a Lima beach.

The couple met online in 2005. Smith travelled to Peru for the first time in 2006, and did so monthly until they were married last February. Gómez’s friends described Smith as “possessive” and “controlling” and said that he had “forbidden Gómez from seeing any of her friends.”

Smith, 28, is currently jailed on unrelated charges in the State Correctional Institution at Smithfield.
