Nine dead in Ayacucho mudslide, heavy rains continue

At least nine people were killed and 15 injured in Huamanga, Ayacucho, Wednesday evening when a mudslide rushed down San Martin street and pushed and entangled several buses and private vehicles at a city intersection.

Heavy rains that caused the mudslide also damaged nine old adobe houses and flooded stores on several streets near the intersection.  According to Civil Defense reports, mud and rocks piled up to 80 cm high (2.6 ft) on some of the streets.

Premier Javier Velásquez Quesquén flew to Huamanga, with the ministers of Agriculture and Women and Development, to meet regional and local authorities to coordinate aid and preventive measures.  Emergency food supplies were being sent from government warehouses in Ica, Arequipa and Junin.   The rainy season is scheduled to continue through February.
