Peru’s García inaugurates new shopping mall in Lima’s Surquillo district

Peru President Alan García inaugurated the construction of a $100 million giant-sized shopping mall in Lima’s district of Surquillo, reported state news agency Andina on Wednesday.

The 120,000-square meter project is Malls Perú’s sixth open plaza shopping center, and is expected to provide 8,000 new jobs.

Chains such as Saga Falabella, Tottus and Sodimac are to set up shop in the Surquillo mall, as well as numerous food court merchants, more than 80 stores and a movie theater.

Construction should be completed by 2010, reported Andina.

Malls Perú is Grupo Falabella Perú’s business branch, and is responsible for the development and administration of its shopping malls – 5 open plazas in Lima, as well as one in Chiclayo and one in Trujillo. In 2008, Grupo Falabella’s sales totaled $260 million.
