Humala Meets Russia’s Anti-Drug Czar

President Ollanta Humala on Monday met with the head of Russia’s anti-drug czar, Victor Ivanov, daily La Republica reported.

Prior to the meeting, Ivanov also met with the head of Peru’s anti-drug agency, Carmen Masias.

The officials signed an agreement to boost anti-drug cooperation between Russia and Peru, as smuggling of cocaine to Russian ports has increased. Peru is one of the world’s top cocaine producers, along with Colombia.

Russia will provide training to Peruvian anti-drug agents, as well as exchange technology to help strengthen security on land and river routes for trafficking cocaine.

The countries also agreed to exchange information to combat drug trafficking.

President Humala seeks to tackle Peru’s expanding cocaine production by increasing eradication of coca crops in strategic areas. It also plans to expand alternative development programs in those same areas.
