Peru Sends Help to Victims of Deadly Landslide

Peru’s Army has sent a helicopter with humanitarian aid for residents in the jungle town of El Porvenir, which was hit by a deadly landslide this week.

The helicopter carried 350 kilograms of goods, including clothes and water, to El Porvenir, located 60 kilometers from the city of Tarapoto on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains in Peru’s San Martin region.

The landslide occurred early Wednesday and was provoked by heavy rains. Initial reports said that at least 17 people were missing, which included children.

Authorities later confirmed that 10 people were killed, while another 10 people are still missing. Thirty other people in the small town were also affected by the landslide, daily El Comercio reported.

Ten houses were destroyed, while six were damaged, the report said.
