Chinese Military Delegation to Visit Peru in November

A high level delegation from China’s armed forces is to visit Peru next month, with an aim to increase ties with the Andean nation’s defense sector, according to the Peruvian Ambassador in Beijing, Gonzalo Gutierrez.

The intention of the trip will also be to promote mechanisms for technological cooperation, daily La Republica reported.

“One of the most key aspects for bilateral exchange is this important mission of high level authorities from the Armed Forces of [China], in early November,” Gutierrez said.

“There is a lot to talk about regarding the transfer of technology and the development of military capacity, among other aspects,” he added.

China has been increasing its ties in Latin America — which has historically closer ties to the United States and Europe, particularly Spain — as the Asian giant looks for natural resources to fuel its economic growth.

Peru, a major producer of copper, zinc, lead and other base metals, is seen as an important country for Chinese firms. China this year ranks as Peru’s leading market, with exports including minerals, fishmeal, and non-traditional goods such as cochineal and turmeric.
