Over 80 percent of Peru traffic accidents caused by human error

The vast majority of traffic accidents in Peru are due to human factors, including recklessness on the part of the driver or pedestrians, according to Peruvian insurance association Apeseg.

Apeseg representative Gustavo Cerdeña said 83  percent of traffic accidents are due to human error, Peru.21 reported.

“The poor behavior of the driver is clear,” Cerdeña said. “They fall asleep, speed, drive while drunk, or are reckless when passing other vehicles. The irresponsibility of drivers is the main cause of injuries and deaths on the road, as well as the enormous [economic] losses that it creates.”

A high number of the deaths and injuries are caused in bus accidents on inter-provincial routes, caused by reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance.

Cerdeña, who is also the general manager of insurance company La Positiva, said that in the past 10 years, more than 33,000 people have been killed in traffic accidents.

Between 2000 and 2010, there were 833,000 accidents, averaging 75,000 per year or 200 a day.  In 2009 alone, there were 3,243 deaths and 48,395 people injured.

Peru’s northern La Libertad region has the highest accident rate, while Piura region, also located in the north, has the lowest number.
