Congress Approves Creation of Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion

Peru’s Congress approved Thursday the creation of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, state news agency Andina reported

The ministry will be responsible for implementing the government’s main social programs. President Ollanta Humala has promised to improve social inclusion for marginalized sectors of Peru that haven’t yet seen the benefits of the country’s strong macroeconomic growth over the past several years.

The new ministry will have two deputy ministers, one for Policy and Social Evaluation and the other for Social Assistance.

“The novelty is to have a ministry completely devoted to the policies of development and social inclusion, with two prongs: [one for] coordinating, planning and the other executor of the social policies,” said Rosa Mavila, the president of the congressional Inclusion Committee.

The new ministry is expected to be led by Kurt Burneo, an economist who is currently Humala’s Minister of Production.  No information has been given on the budget to support this new ministry.
