Peru presents proposal to conclude FTA talks with Japan

Peru has presented a proposal to Japan to wrap up the free trade agreement the two countries have been negotiating, daily Gestion reported.

“Peru’s negotiating team has made a closing proposal and we need Japan to meet a few requests for the admission of Peruvian products that we believe is important,” said Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros.

“They will have the meetings that they have to do and if tomorrow we receive a positive response on our proposal that would be perfect and the negotiations would be closed. But if not, we will continue negotiating,” he said.

Earlier this month, the foreign trade ministry said it was expecting to conclude the trade talks with Japan by the end of November.

Talks between Peru and Japan for a trade deal began in April 2009. The agreement, if finalized, would be the fifth Peru signs with an Asian country.
