Peru has been elected to the panel of vice presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, for the 2012-2013 period of sessions beginning on September 25.
The diplomat to take the post is Enrique Roman, Peru’s representative at the UN. Roman said the appointment of Peru to the post is recognition of the country’s foreign relations policy.
“This is recognition from the international community of the role that Peru plays in areas of multilateralism,” Roman said, according to state news agency Andina.
It is the fourth time that a Peruvian diplomat has been elected vice president of the General Assembly. Other Peruvians that held that role were Carlos Alzamora, Javier Perez de Cuellar (who later was elected Secretary General of the UN for two periods), and Carlos Mackehenie de la Fuente.
There are 21 vice presidents at the UN General Assembly —six are elected from African states, five from Asian states, three from Europe, three from Latin America, and five from the members of the Security Council.
The last time Peru was elected to a vice-presidency was 30 years ago.
