13 People Killed In Bus Accident In Huanuco

Thirteen people have been killed and 40 injured during a bus accident in the mountainous jungle region of Huanuco, state news agency Andina reported.

The bus left the jungle city of Pucallpa, in the eastern department of Ucayali, on Tuesday with its final destination as Lima. The bus belonged to the company Bella Durmiente, or Sleeping Beauty [the name given to a landscape in Tingo Maria], according to the National Police.

According to early reports, the bus rolled down a mountain slope. Further information was not immediately available.

Bus accidents are common on provincial routes in Peru, most frequently caused by fast and reckless driving on narrow mountain roads, or poor vehicle maintenance. In March, 18 people were killed when a bus plunged off a 200 meter cliff in the department of Piura in northern Peru.
