Lima zoo shows off rare baby hippo

A 60-kilo baby hippo has made its first public appearance at Lima’s zoological park, and has already become the site’s top attraction, state news agency Andina reported Wednesday.

Born on April 2, 2009, the baby hippo was kept under observation for four weeks and was only introduced to the public on Wednesday.

Yet to be named, the baby hippo will be kept apart from her father “Pipo” and older brother “Felipe” for the next five months, to avoid any violence between the males. Two years ago, “Felipe” was the first hippopotamus born in captivity in Peru.

Local children will get a chance to vote on a name for the baby over the internet.
