Adex: Peru’s export revenue falls by 14 percent in 2009

The Peruvian Association of Exporters, or Adex, announced Friday that Peruvian exports decreased by 14 percent in 2009. The total value of Peru’s exports totaled $26.5 billion last year, down from $30.6 billion in 2008, state news agency Andina reported.

Mineral exports fell 11 percent to $15.9 billion, comprising 60 percent of Peru’s total exports. Exports from Peru’s mining sector consistently account for a significant portion of the country’s export revenue. In 2008, for example, mineral exports represented 63 percent of export revenues. Peru is the world’s top producer of silver. It is the second largest producer of zinc, third largest of copper and tin, fourth in lead, and sixth in gold.

Peru’s other main export sectors also declined in 2009. Petroleum exports brought in $2 billion in 2009, down 29 percent, fishing industry exports fell by 4 percent, totalling $1.7 billion and agricultural exports totalled $633 million, a 7 percent decrease from 2008.

Despite the decrease in Peru’s export revenues last year, Adex says it is optimistic exports will increase in 2010 due to strong revenue results in December. “In monthly data, the figures show that December was the best month with sales of $2.8 billion, which represents a 43 percent increase compared to the same month in 2008.”

Peru’s major trading partners are the U.S., China, European Union, Switzerland, Canada, and Japan.
