Chile Defeats Peru in World Cup Qualifier

Chile defeated Peru on Tuesday by 4-2 during a qualification match held in Santiago for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Chile opened up the scoring with a goal in the first minute thanks to a header from Waldo Ponce. A second goal for Chile came in the 16th minute by Eduardo Vargas and with a few minutes before the end of the first half Gary Medel scored Chile’s third.

Increased Security at Peru-Paraguay World Cup Qualifier

Peru’s national football team beat Paraguay 2-0 in well-played match Friday night, the first of the qualifying games for the World Cup in Brazil 2014, amid increased security put in place at the National Stadium by the police force.Â
The tight security measures  follow the death of a fan during a recent club game between rivals Universitario and Alianza Lima at the Universitario stadium, where security measures were poor and police did not stem violence building up during the game.

Gov’t Says No Public for Upcoming Soccer Games Following Violence

Interior Minister Oscar Valdes said that upcoming soccer games in Peru will be played without fans in the stadiums, a measure implemented by the government following the violent death of a fan over the weekend during a game between two rival Lima teams.
“We have a special order from President [Ollanta Humala] and the cabinet chief has already said it: there is going to be a punishment,” state news agency Andina reported Valdes as saying. “The next games are going to be played without public as a measure that the government is taking into account the utmost seriousness it deserves.”

Lima Football Stadium Closed Following Violent Death Of Fan

Lima’s Monumental stadium, owned by the Universitario football club, was temporarily closed Monday following the violent death of a 23-year-old soccer fan at the end of a game between Universitario and its classic rival, Alianza Lima, on Saturday.
Walter Oyarce, an industrial engineering student at San Ignacio de Loyola University and supporter of the Alianza Lima club, was thrown about10 meters from box seats by hooligans from the rival team, Universitario.

Uruguay eliminated Peru at Copa America

Peru’s run for the Copa America came to an end Tuesday with a defeat in the semifinal at the hands of Uruguay.
Uruguay grabbed the momentum early on, although Peru managed to hold its opponents back until the second half when Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, 24, knocked in two goals.

Peru to play Colombia in Copa America Quarter Final

Peru is set to play Colombia in the quarter finals of the Copa America after a third place finish in its group following a defeat to Chile on Tuesday night.

Peru wins team gold at World Surfing Games

Peru’s surfing team will take home gold at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games at Punta Hermos, outdoing 30 other countries competing at the event.
The host country finished first in the team section with 14,370 points, ahead of Australia with 14,160 points, South Africa at 11,820 and Brazil with 11,340.
“This is historic, it is the best moment of my carrer,” Sofia Mulanovich, who is the first Peruvian ever to win an Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event, told Radioprogramas. “This is special because we are the team world champions. It’s the best.”
In the individual categories, Mulanovich earned the bronze with 730 points behind New Zealand’s Paige Hareb with 860 points and Australia’s Chelsea Hodges with 1,000 points.
In the men’s category, Peru’s Gabriel Villáran won silver while Tahiti’s Hira Teriinatoofa earned the top spot on the podium.
Surfers take on challenging swells at World Surfing Games in Punta Hermosa

The third day of the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games at Peru’s Punta Hermosa saw some of the biggest waves ever at a World Surfing Games.
“Despite the challenging conditions there was spectacular surfing throughout the day that often had the teams and spectators on their feet and cheering,” the event organizers said in a press release.
On Friday, three Peruvian men – Matias Mulanovich, the brother of fellow surfer Sofia, Gabriel Villarán and Cristobal del Col – advanced into Round 4 following the Repercharge Round, the events first eliminations.
“Talented surfers to be sure, but you may also credit some of their success on a keen understanding of the lineups and conditions that they’re competing in,” the release said. “No question that the surf’s been, in a word, challenging, and while some competitors were lost in the victory-at-sea surf, the Peruvian’s have stayed the course.” Read more…
Peruvian soccer star says country had talent to qualify for South Africa

Former Peruvian soccer star Teofilo Cubillas says the country had the talent to make the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but “does not want to,” RPP radio station reported.
“I’m saddened that our country won’t be present at the [World Cup]. But what hurts the most is that we have the ability, but we don’t want it,” said Cubillas, who is arguably Peru’s all time best soccer player and who in 1972 was awarded South America’s Footballer of the Year, a year before Brazil’s Pele received the award. Peruvian athlete wins second gold at South American Games

Peruvian track and field athlete Jorge McFarlane won his second gold medal on Sunday at the ninth South American Games, a regional multi-sport event currently being held in MedellĂn, Colombia.
McFarlane’s second gold came in the men’s long jump. He also had earned the top spot on the podium on Saturday in the men’s 110 meter hurdle.
“I’m very happy with the results in the South American Games,” McFarlane told Radio Programas Peru on Monday. “I’m proud to have these results for Peru. My brother also earned two medals in the same events that I competed in. That also makes me happy.”
McFarlane’s brother, Javier, was second in the men’s long jump and third in the 100 meter hurdle.
“The truth is that the preparation we had was very strong, the planning was very structured that we had been working on for seven years with our trainer Óscar Valiente,” McFarlane added.
On Monday night, Peru had 20 medals and was tied for sixth in the overall medal count with Ecuador. Peruvian athletes had earned six gold medals, and seven in silver and bronze.
The medal count was being led by Colombia (144), followed by Brazil (116), Venezuela (68), Argentina (65), and Chile (25).
