The leader of Peru’s PPC party, Lourdes Flores, has increased her lead among candidates for the mayor of Lima, according to an opinion poll by IMA Marketing Studio.
According to the poll of residents in metropolitan Lima, 36.4 percent of those polled said they would vote for Flores, a former congresswoman and two-time presidential candidate. The support for Flores dropped from 38.6 percent in July and 39.4 percent in June, however the next closest candidate, Alex Kouri, saw a greater decrease in his support.
Nineteen percent of respondents said they would vote for Kouri, down from 25.6 percent in July and 26.6 percent in June.
In third place is Susana Villaran, who has 9.7 percent support, up from 4.3 percent in July and 2.8 percent in June.
When asked who they would definitely not vote for, 33.3 percent of those polled said Kouri, 22.7 percent said Flores, and 5.9 percent for Villaran.
Almost 30 percent of those polled said crime is the biggest problem in Lima, while 24.9 percent said that traffic is the main problem in the capital.
Municipal elections in Lima are planned for October 3.
For Peru’s presidential elections, planned for April 2011, 25 percent of those polled in metropolitan Lima support the city’s current mayor, Luis Castañeda, down from 28.3 percent in July.
Congresswoman Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of ex-President Alberto Fujimori, has 24 percent support, up from 17.8 percent last month while support for Peru’s former president, Albejandro Toledo, has increased slightly to 16.2 percent. The leader of Peru’s Nationalist Party, Ollanta Humala, has 6.3 percent support, down from 7.8 percent in the previous month.
In addition, the poll also asked residents in the capital about their support for same-sex marriage with reference to the new law passed in Argentina. Sixty-six percent of those polled said they disapproved of same-sex marriage, with 27.8 percent saying they approve. In addition, 87.3 percent said that Peru is not prepared to accept same-sex marriage, while 8.8 percent said the country is ready.
The mayoral poll was based on interviews with 538 residents in Metropolitan Lima from August 6-9 and had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points. The poll on presidential candidates included results from surveys of 600 residents from Metropolitan Lima and Lima’s port city of Callao, and had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
