Christmas Fire Leaves 200 Families Homeless in Callao

A fire on Christmas day destroyed more than 50 homes and left some 200 families homeless in the port city of Callao. The fire began at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday in the low-income neighborhood of Atalaya, and was caused by firecrackers, which are popular during the holidays. No fatalities were reported, local media said.

The High Commission for the 2008 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum has announced that Lima and the port city of Callao will replace Cusco as the venue for the scheduled APEC tourism meetings. According to Agencia Andina, the decision was made because of the “logistic and administrative conditions” in Lima and Callao.
