Villarán and Flores in statistical dead heat for 1st place in Lima mayoral race

Leftist candidate Susana Villarán is on pace to overtake conservative opponent Lourdes Flores as front runner in the race for Lima mayor with 33 percent support, a poll released Sunday night showed.

Flores is now trailing, with 31 percent of voter preference, according to the poll, conducted by Lima-based Ipsos & Apoyo, and broadcast on the weekly TV news show Cuarto Poder.

The poll, which surveyed 490 people from Sept. 9-11, had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points, which means the two candidates are now in a statistical dead heat for first place, with 20 days left before the election.

“We are a proposition distinct from the conservatives — a leftist proposition, something I have not denied,” Villarán said in an interview published in Monday’s El Comercio. “Our proposals are not improvised. We have worked eight months on our municipal government plan with the organizations that form (the political alliance) Fuerza Social.”

Just a month ago, Flores held a double digit lead over Villarán, whose campaign started to surge after Peru’s National Election Board (JNE) disqualified Alex Kouri from the race because he did not comply with residency requirements.

Trailing in third place, with 8 percent, is the evangelical pastor Humberto Lay, of the National Restoration party, followed by Fernando Andrade of the “We Are Peru” party, with 3 percent, the Ipsos & Apoyo poll showed.
