Princess Mako of Japan in Lima for 120th anniversary of Japanese immigration

Princess Mako of Japan in Lima

Princess Mako of Japan arrived in Lima Tuesday night for a six-day visit that will include several days in Cusco and a return to Lima for events to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to Peru.

The princess, the eldest niece of Emperor Naruhito, will then travel to Bolivia to visit the Japanese community in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.  Although migration to Bolivia was not as large as to Peru, it began shortly after 1899 when the first ship of immigrants landed in Peru, at the port of Cerro Azul, south of Lima.

Princess Mako travelled to Brazil in 2018 for similar commemorations of Japanese migration.
