Peruvian doctors successfully extracted 17 objects, including pins, pens, a belt clasp and a liquid paper bottle, from the stomach of a 38-year-old man in the northern coast city of Trujillo.

Luis Zárate Arce, who suffers from schizophrenia, was transported to the city’s regional health care center Tuesday after complaining about acute stomach pain, Radio Programas radio reported. It was later discovered that his colon had been perforated by swallowed needles.

Stunned doctors Julio Acevedo and Augusto Salazar extracted a total of 17 metallic and non-metallic objects from Arce’s stomach.

The objects include pins, pens, nails, two wires measuring 45 and 20 cm, or between 8 and 18 inches, a liquid paper bottle, a penknife, a belt clasp and needles, according to daily La Republica.

According to the doctors, Arce swallowed the objects approximately one month prior to the extraordinary medical procedure.
