Former first lady Eliane Karp charged with embezzlement of state funds

Criminal charges have been pressed against former first lady Eliane Karp – and two of her nephews – for the embezzlement of 200,000 soles, or $69,000 in state funds from 2001-2005.

Daily La República reported that anti-corruption prosecutor Marlene Berrú Marreros pressed charges against Karp, her nephews Jorge Luis Toledo Velásquez and Jessica Paola Toledo Rodríguez, as well as seven other former government employees.

According to daily Trome, Karp allegedly used the embezzled funds to buy lavish jewelry, perfumes, shoes, flowers, and to get her hair done in the capital’s most exclusive salons.
