Peru’s universities are lagging behind their counterparts in other Latin American countries, according to a new ranking by QS World University.

The top ranking Peruvian university is the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, which came in at 31, up from 34th place in the 2011 survey. Other universities included in the ranking are Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, which was ranked at 46 (up from 49th in 2011), and the medical/sciences  Universidad Cayetano Heredia at 81.

Coming in at ranking 88 is the Unversidad Agraria de La Molina, while the Universidad de Lima was at 144 and the Universidad San Martin de Porres at 151.

According to the ranking, the top university in Latin America is Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil, while the second best is the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

Three of the top 10 universities in Latin America are in Brazil, while four of the top 10 are from Chile. Mexico and Colombia also have universities in the top 10.

In the world ranking of 700 universities, according to the OS survey, the top 10 are University of Cambridge, Harvard University, M.I.T., Yale, Oxford, Imperial College London, University College London, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.

Six indicators are drawn together to form an international ranking of universities via a global survey: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), faculty student ratio (20%), proportion of international students (5%), and proportion of international faculty (5%).

In addition, rankings in five broad faculty areas are produced: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences & Management. These are based entirely on the results of a global academic survey that includes a look at the level of research and the programs in each discipline.
